Set up a welcome email automation in Xendy

Introduction

A welcome email is often the first interaction someone has with your brand. This may be directly after subscribing to your newsletter or after placing their first order. With a welcome email automation, you can easily make a strong first impression and encourage engagement and purchases.

What is a welcome email automation?

A welcome email automation is a workflow that automatically sends an email or a series of emails as soon as someone:

  • Pre-purchase: subscribes to your newsletter or email list.
  • Post-purchase: has placed their first order.

Create a welcome automation

Setting up a welcome email automation in Xendy works the same as creating other automations.

  1. Go to ‘Email automations’ in the left menu and click ‘New automation’ in the top right.
  2. Choose ‘From a new segment’.
  3. Create a static segment if you want to send a direct confirmation (e.g. for new newsletter sign-ups), or a dynamic segment if you want to send a welcome email automation after a first purchase.
  4. Select ‘Immediate’ so the email is sent as soon as someone enters the segment.
  5. Give the automation a clear name, such as ‘Welcome after signup’ or ‘Welcome after first order’.

Adding emails to the workflow

After creating the automation, click ‘Step 1: add an email’. You can choose from:

  • Blank email: create a completely new email without any blocks.
  • Select template: copy an existing template from ‘Templates’ in the left menu.
  • Select draft: move an email from your drafts into this email automation.

Common structure:

  • Pre-purchase welcome:
    • Email 1 (immediately): thank them for subscribing and optionally provide a discount code.
    • Email 2 (1 day later): show popular products or categories.
    • Email 3 (3 days later):share a blog post or review.
  • Post-purchase welcome:
    • Email 1 (immediately): thank them for their purchase and confirm the order.
    • Email 2 (2 days later):offer tips or suggest complimentary products.
    • Email 3 (5 days later): ask for a review or introduce a loyalty program.

Use the plus and minus icons to set delays between steps.

Activate and manage the automation
